"Mt Cook (3,754 metres/12,316ft) reflected in Lake Pukaki - small photograph"
The milky blue color of the lake comes from what is called "glacier flour".
The lake is fed by water from Tasman Glacier, and as the tons of ice in the glacier
move over the rocks it crushes and pulverizes some of the rock into a powder called glacier flour,
which mixes with the water and reflects the sunlight
once once in th e lake to create that unique and beautiful milky blue color.
